“Circus for climate” goes to Kurzeme region

03.03.2023.

The international project “Circus for climate” will travel to the Kurzeme region this March with activities for young people and professionals of the cultural sector.

On March 7 and 8, Liepaja concert hall “Lielais Dzintars” will host a workshop for cultural professionals “Unweirding the Contemporary art – how to make it more accessible in the regions?”

The main goal of this creative workshop will be to find methods to make contemporary and experimental art more comprehensible and accessible to Latvian society in different age groups and in the Latvian regions. Professionals from the cultural sector from Cēsis, Valmiera, Smiltene, Jaunpils, Talsi, Ventspils, Liepāja, Saldus and Broceni will participate in the workshops. The workshops will be led by artists from Latvia and Norway.

Following the workshop, two laboratories dedicated to the themes of art activism and climate change will be held for the youngsters of Kurzeme: from March 10 to 13 in Dundagas Palace (Talsu district) and March 15-18 at the Laidu manor (Kuldiga Castle).

This will be an opportunity for youngsters to get to know circus, dance and theater techniques, to participate in discussions about climate change and environment, to learn more about the possible solutions, as well as to experience how the participants’ creative ideas turn into a circus performance!

The laboratories will be led by contemporary circus and dance artists from “Acting for Climate” (Norway):  Amund Bentsen, Emma Langmoen, Abigael Winsvold and Michele De Riu – together with circus and dance artists from Latvia: Aleksey Smolov, Alise Bokaldere and Maija Sukute, who will be joined by the Latvian composer Kaspars Kurdeko.

The main goal of “Circus for Climate” is to explore the collective empowerment that a multidisciplinary approach to education, art and activism can provide. The aim is to create a space for youngsters, artists and environmental specialists to meet and to work together across different regions of Latvia around the topic of art activism for the environment.
