“Raaf” is the Dutch word for “raven” – a bird of mythical significance, a messenger between heaven and earth, and a clever creature that spends most of its life with a single companion.
Sweden’s first modern high-wire performance Raaf is an enchanting family adventure about friendship, life and the bond between sisters. It celebrates the relationships that keep us connected, even when each of us follows our own path.
Combining the traditional discipline of high-wire walking with warm, poetic choreography, the performers invite audiences to discover shapes, stories and unexpected beauty – much like watching clouds drift across the sky. Traditionally, this circus discipline is based on maintaining balance while walking along a metal wire high above the ground, often with a long balancing pole in hand.
Below Zero Company was born in the summer of 2018, when four circus artists set sail through the Swedish archipelago. By the time they returned to shore, the idea for the company had taken shape.
Today, the Swedish contemporary circus company creates bold and innovative performances inspired by the country’s northern landscapes and long, cold winters, where warmth, human connection and trust become essential. These contrasts – cold and warmth, fragility and strength – define the company’s artistic language.
The company’s name reflects the performers’ ability to transcend gravity. In the air, their movements appear almost weightless, drifting like falling snowflakes as if time has paused and gravity has momentarily disappeared.
