Contemporary Dance Classic on Screen: “Fase”

Celebrating the 90th birthday of American minimalist composer Steve Reich this autumn, Dejas māja Rīgas cirkā (Dance House at Rīgas cirks) invites audiences to a screening of the contemporary dance classic “Fase” on 9 November at 18:30.

The film by Belgian director Thierry De Mey is a cinematic adaptation of a choreographic work by world-renowned choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, in which movement is closely intertwined with the music of Steve Reich.

Created in 1982, the stage production “Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich” consists of four choreographic compositions set to Reich’s works “Piano Phase”, “Come Out”, “Violin Phase” and “Clapping Music”. Repetition, synchronisation and gradual rhythmic shifts create a hypnotic interplay between movement and sound.

This production marked the beginning of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s international career and became one of the most significant works in the history of contemporary dance, laying the foundations for the artistic language of her later-established dance company, Rosas. Over more than 40 years, the production has been performed hundreds of times on international stages and continues to be presented today.

In 2002, to mark the 20th anniversary of the choreography, director Thierry De Mey created its cinematic adaptation. Filmed in different settings, the camera’s perspective, editing, interplay of light and space give movement a new dimension. The film features the choreographer herself performing alongside dancer Michèle Anne De Mey.

Before the screening

Choreographer Krišjānis Sants (“TUVUMI”) will give an introduction before the screening. He is a graduate of P.A.R.T.S., the international contemporary dance school founded by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, and has also performed as a dancer in her choreographic works.
