Rīgas cirks Residency Programme : Based on Kimberly
The circus company Based On Kimberly is developing the performance “Yes Person” as part of Rīgas Cirks’ residency programme.
Based on Kimberly, a new company created by Imogen Huzel and Inka Pehkonen (formerly co-directors of Fauna Circus and Sisus). Their desire is to uncompromisingly and unpretentiously commit to our vision of what circus can be, and make things happen! Using the resources they have and whatever artistic medium best serves their vision, they create from a punk, playful, and politically left playground. Fueled by love and created with a clown mentality, they frequently incorporate topics of feminism, freedom of speech, friendship, community, sexuality, and identity. They aim to create an open atmosphere for artistic processes and experiments to grow and find their tangible place in the world.
“Yes Person” is a circus show that celebrates ideas too peculiar to live—but too fabulous to die. Inspired by the concept of “killing one’s darlings,” the creative process of discarding beloved but unfit ideas, this performance breathes new life into those very darlings.Embracing the rule of ‘yes-saying’ in devising quickly leads to an expansive wasteland of ideas. From the dregs of their old creative processes—the sediment of ideas left behind, too mismatched, ambitious, or nonsensical to fit into past creations—comes a performance that gives these discarded concepts a second chance to flourish, expand, and spiral out of control.
Yes Person is the first performance supported by w/, a European network of performing arts organisations that acts as a key driving force for the sustainable international development and visibility of dance and circus. Rīgas Cirks is one of eight organisations participating in the w/ network as co-producers of performances.
