Rīgas Cirks Residency Program for Baltic Circus Artists: Maija Sukute
18.07.2025.
This year, from July 18th to 31st, artist Maija Sukute is working on her upcoming solo performance “Hurt” as part of the Rīgas Cirks Residency Program for Baltic artists.
“Hurt” is a fusion of dance and aerial acrobatics that explores the body and mind’s ability to adapt in the face of difficulty and pain. At the heart of the performance is a being from another world, suddenly thrust into a human body—experiencing, all at once, the shock of physical and emotional fracture. One question remains: is it possible to break free, or must we learn to live with it, as humans do
Maija Sukute is a dancer, choreographer, and aerial acrobat. “Hurt” is her debut solo performance, in which she explores the meeting point between contemporary dance and aerial acrobatics. She challenges the notion that aerial arts must depend solely on spectacle, choreographed drops, or aesthetically pleasing poses. For Maija, an artist is truly alive only when they are fully authentic.
