OPEN CALL FOR RIGA CIRCUS WELL-BEING RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Riga Circus Well-being Residency program is looking for artists/artist groups from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia with interest in socially engaged work for 3 weeks residency in Cesvaine Parish, Latvia. The residency is for artists from any field of art – circus, dance, music, theatre, performance art, visual art, cross-disciplinary etc.
The Well-being Residency will take place from July 29 to August 18, 2020 at the Children’s Village Graši, which is a long-term social care and social rehabilitation institution that provides care close to the family environment for children and adolescents from socially disadvantaged families and without parental care. Currently, there are 30 children from different parts of Latvia living in the village (aged 5 to 17) and 16 staff members working there.
The Children’s Village Graši is located in peaceful and idyllic surroundings of rural area of Latvia – 180 km from Riga.
Riga Circus Well-being Residency program is providing an opportunity for socially engaged contemporary artists/artist groups (up to 4 people) who value exchange between artists and all groups of society both for their artistic development and for encouraging social change through art. During the residency, artists are asked to develop their art project involving in their project the inhabitants of the Children’s Village Graši.
Application documents:
- a short written application in Latvian or English, explaining who you are and what project you would like to develop (max 3600 characters). Please include: what do you expect to gain from this experience and how that will help you to develop your artistic expression. Also, please describe the preliminary ideas of the artistic activities you would like to carry out with the inhabitants of the Children’s Village,
- information on the technical requirements,
- portfolio of previous works or a link to the web site.

About the Well-being Residency Program
The residency is a part of an international Well-being Residency Think Tank project that aims to develop a model for successful well-being residencies. The project is supported by the Council of the Baltic Sea States
The experience from this residency will be documented and used as material for the model. The artists-in-residence are expected to share their experiences of the residency process through personal documentation or interview.
Accommodation:
-a guest house with 3 separate rooms,
-shared kitchen, WC and showers.
Working conditions
The art project is expected to be developed within the village area. There will be access to the hall of the main building of the village in case of bad weather conditions.
The language used in the Children’s Village is Latvian. The artists-in-residence, however, are not expected to be able to communicate in Latvian. The residency team can use English as their working language. There will be residency coordinator at the spot during the whole residency period, who will assist in the communication and other daily practicalities.
The Residency Program covers:
-travel costs (roundtrip from/to Baltic countries or any city in Latvia to/from Cesvaine),
-accommodation,
-meals 3 times a day,
-residency grant.
Riga Circus terms and conditions:
-artists-in-residence remain present in the Children’s Village of Graši the whole time of the residency,
-at the end of the residency artists-in-residence are required to show the residency results to public in a form of the project presentation, the work-in-progress or an exhibition,
-artists-in-residence must credit Riga Circus as a residency partner in all marketing and communications relating to the residency as well as the production developed during the residency,
-artists-in-residence must have in place personal accident insurance.
