Baiba Reinika

15.11.2019.

For a long time animals had taken centre stage in the circus, and the origins of the contemporary circus are associated with horses and their performances. The founder of the Riga Circus Alberts Salamonskis was known in the circus world as an excellent horse trainer. Over the years many animals common in Latvia as well as more exotic ones have performed in the Riga Circus.

The vet Dr Baiba Reinika talks about her work spanning over ten years in the Riga Circus taking care of health and welfare of circus animals. In the conversation with Dr Baiba Reinika we will hear about a python who laid eggs, an ostrich that basically is the same magpie only bigger, a bear who loved biscuits with condensed milk, about “Latgalian yuza” and other funny tales. And indeed, having encountered all kinds of living creatures – from ostriches to cormorants – in the Riga Circus, Dr Baiba Reinika has many stories to tell.
