About the workshop

Contemporary circus has its specific way of expression: Knowing more about its history and dramaturgy and understanding its complexity is the intent of this two days masterclass created by Around About Circus, a digital platform dedicated to disseminating knowledge and writing on contemporary circus. The first day introduces the language of circus arts from its historical basis, tracing the genre’s evolution in Europe and focusing on its development over the last 40 years, with specific attention to the two main themes of this edition of the RE RĪGA festival: object manipulation and clowning. The second day explores the possible writing and critical approaches combining the analysis of existing texts with the shows at the RE RĪGA festival. The masterclass will become a place to share reflections on what the participants experience, gathering the different points of view on each performance and leading them to explore their possibilities around writing.

Around About Circus explores contemporary circus as an artistic language in the performing arts. The digital publication aims to build bridges and disseminate discourses across borders. It curates and produces content necessary to meet the protagonists, cover, support and promote events throughout Europe, stimulate discussion around specific issues of interest, and resonate with the activities of cultural organisations in the European ecosystem.
