Riga Circus Residency Programme for Baltic Artists: MARIANO GEDWILLO (LV)
From 13 to 27 January 2026, Mariano Gedwillo (also known by his stage name Cronopio) will continue work on his latest production, Muskuy (“Dreams”), as part of the Riga Circus Residency Programme.
Muskuy was born from the artist’s desire to explore dreams in all their forms, playing with surrealism and the hidden truths that lie within them. The work combines clowning, contemporary circus, live music, theatrical lighting, and dance to create a visually rich and emotionally immersive experience.
At the heart of the show is the story of a dull, grey, seemingly will-less character who cannot sleep. When he finally drifts off, he enters the world of dreams. Yet with each dawn, the greyness of his world returns. Through this ongoing struggle between light and shadow, he discovers that dreaming is one of humanity’s primary driving forces — but it only truly exists when one learns to dream while awake.
During the residency, the artist will experiment with various rigging techniques and develop a new circus apparatus. He will be joined by acrobat Roberts Aubēns and composer Rodrigo Manfrinatti.
Mariano Gedwillo is a clown, director, tightrope walker, and juggler. He began his artistic career in 1997, performing across Argentina and other South American countries, and has been living and working in Riga since 2022.
Mariano’s search for a genuine and authentic Clown character is grounded in the realities of life, and he is fascinated by interactions with diverse audiences — rich and poor, young and old, serious and playful, curious and sceptical.
His latest project arises from the desire to explore dreams in all their forms and to play with elements of surrealism and the illusions they create. The production will incorporate clowning, music, dance, and lighting effects.
