Rīgas Cirks Kicks Off the Spring Season with Catalan Artist Manel Rosés’ Performance “Ákri” on March 1st and 2nd!
25.02.2025.
On March 1st at 19:00 and on March 2nd at 16:00 and 19:00, Rīgas Cirks invites you to experience Manel Rosés Moretó’s philosophically witty performance Ákri. Later, on March 31st, in collaboration with the concert hall Lielais Dzintars, audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy the musical circus performance for teenagers, I Hate That They Eat Too Loud. The spring season will conclude on April 24th and 25th with the Catalan collective Impulsos and their performance Languages.
Rīgas Cirks’ spring season presents an exciting program that highlights both international and local circus artists. The season will be filled with dynamic, poetic, and musical performances that captivate audiences of all ages. This year, special attention is given to Catalan circus art. Rīgas Cirks’ Artistic Director, Mārtiņš Ķibers, explains the choice: “Catalan artists possess unconventional dramaturgical techniques, absurdity, temperament, brilliant humor, and symbolic play.” Rīgas Cirks Director Māra Pāvula further emphasizes that this focus is no coincidence: “In recent years, Catalan artists have gained widespread admiration and recognition worldwide, and we see them as an example to follow. Through their work, they demonstrate that the circus is an art form that can carry lesser-known languages and cultures into the world.”
The Spring Season Kicks Off with “Ákri”
The first major event of the season takes place on March 1st and 2nd, when Catalan acrobat Manel Rosés Moretó brings his performance Ákri to Rīgas Cirks. This solo performance is a unique duel between the artist and 22 steps—a journey filled with self-irony, playful lightness, and a profound human perspective on the changes we experience in life.
Speaking about his work, Rosés says: “Ákri combines acrobatics with acting and clowning techniques. While creating this show, I asked myself: ‘How do we move from one place to another? Can we transform while continuing to do what we do?’”
The performance offers a rare opportunity to experience contemporary circus language that merges physical virtuosity with delicate humor and philosophical exploration.
A Musical Circus Experience for Teenagers
On March 31st and April 1st, Rīgas Cirks will be transformed by the musical performance I Hate That They Eat Too Loud, created as part of the CirqueMusique project. This show delves into how teenagers perceive the world and how seemingly small details can trigger intense emotions. Combining theater, circus, and music, the dramaturg Ance Muižniece, along with composers Krists Auznieks, Platons Buravickis, Linda Leimane, and Santa Ratniece, have crafted an engaging story that is brought to life on stage by circus artists from Latvia and Norway.
“Languages” – A Surreal Journey into the Absurd
On April 24th and 25th, the Catalan spirit will return to the Rīgas Cirks arena with Impulsos’ performance Languages, directed by the renowned Catalan director Pau Portabella. This work blends circus, theater, music, movement, and visual poetry to create a surreal space where absurdity and loneliness collide.
